Updates from the project
Advisory board meeting
5/10/2026 – UZ Brussel
In October it was time for the second advisory board meeting of the project. This time, we were first introduced to the current trends in epidemic monitoring by our partners at Scienscano. Afterwards, we held two round-tables. During the first one, we discussed possible interventions that can happen in a hospital to mitigate the effects of a pandemic. In the second one, we identified barriers and facilitators of AI applications in a hospital. Both topics are crucial to our project and armed with the discussions and input of the advisory board, we will be able to continue in the right direction!

Symposium “AI for Infectious Disease Modelling”
24/09/2026 – Quinton House, Utrecht, the Netherlands
In September, Pieter Libin gave a talk on decision support for epidemic control with reinforcement learning and realistic simulators at the symposium “AI for infectious disease modelling” in Utrecht. Other speakers discussed the use of AI in disease forecasting, AI based decision support and the needs and expectations from a government perspective.
Workshop “Combining Infectious Disease Modelling and AI”
14/09/2026 – Learning Theater, VUB Campus Etterbeek
In September, many people from different backgrounds gathered in Brussels at the VUB for a workshop on disease modelling and AI, organized by a collaboration of students (among which Eline, Emily, Sam and Ze) from the VUB AI Lab, University of Antwerp and UHasselt. Pieter Libin gave a talk on the use infectious disease modelling and the role of reinforcement learning in field. Other interesting lectures were on Science communication under AI and how AI can work together with more traditional epi-models. The day was concluded with a panel discussion moderated by Phillipe Beutels.

Advisory board meeting
13/02/2026 – VUB AI Lab experience center
On the 16th of March, the advisory board of the project came together to discuss the first 6 months of the project. The various partners of the project, scientific institutions, government organizations, health data experts and many more, got to know the researchers working on the project. They gave presentations on their ongoing work and the partners of the advisory board gave comments which led to interesting discussions, pushing our work to be as relevant as possible.
